Landed here in Arica after a quite bizarre journey in a 'snoop dog' vehicle (as Sarah likes to describe it). The car was huge, width ways and off the ground height. Even the door locks were bizarrely big! 13soles from Tacna each. We crossed over the Chilean border with no major problems other than when my backpack went throught he xray machine the officer took the bag to the side and asked if i had any vegetables inside it?!?! I started laughing and said no obviously, and he says are you sure? Now i´m really giggling! So he starts to go through yhe bag and pulls out the African voodoo doll things, a bit embarassing but he likes them. He goes rummaging again and pulls out another parcel, Sarah says to him; oh you´re going to love this one! It was an African bird mobile! A crows started to gather round it and all! Thankfully nothing got confiscated.
We got to Tacna from Ica on a bus that was showing porn films, in spanish thankfully! But then Top Gun was put on, we were delighted even though it was still in spanish.
Anyway Arica - stayed in the closest possible accommodation to bus terminal, we are getting pretty lazy at this travel malarky! We really don´t agree with much of what the Lonely Planet says these days, for example the CaffeLatte place reccommened served us possibly the worst tea ever and my hotdog had more tomato than dog! Not a great deal to do here that was of interest but they do have streets and streets of shoe shops!
We thought we´d make the, most of our short stay in Chile and booked a day tour to the National parque (15GBP each), you go up to as high as 4800metres which didn´t agree with us but the oldies were doing away fine! Tour was in spainish, no matter what they tell you at agents. Great scenery, bizarre looking animals, fed a llama and Sarah got her picture taken with a phalic church!! I didn´t know these things existed let alone what phalic mean´t! Stayed in Putre (3500m) that night, stayed in bed for 14hrs recovering! Las Palermos hostel was a cosy wee stay in Putre but no hot water this morning but that´s what we get for only having 7000pesos left to pay for the room, being 1000 short! Chile proven to be the most expensive place and the food ain´t much to write home about! But the Chilean people have being very warm and friendly.
*Wrap up very warm if you go on the National parque tour*
