Saturday - Fine
I believe getting up before 5am is a crime, so we committed a crime this morning, and apart from feeling wrecked for most of the train trip, it was a nice journey.
We changed trains at Naples centrale and Pompeii was only 3 stations down the track. The B&B was a 10min walk away from the station and an easy walk to the Pompeii site.
After some lunch and a couple coffees we headed over to the site, and boy did we get lucky. Today was a free day to visit! Unreal or what!
The city of Pompei was recovering from a major earthquake that shock the city in 62 AD and in 79 AD copped the full force of Vesuvius's pyroclastic flows. The city was mostly destroyed and buried under 4 to 6 m of ash. Pompei had a population of 20,000 and they expect no one survived. We got to see quite a few of the victims today. Most of the victims died instantly. As the superheated gas burned their lungs and contracted their muscles, leaving the bodies in the fetal position.
I loved Pompei the first time I saw it, and I think the second time was even better. Especially because after the first visit I had read up a bit on the site and seen a few docos. Kim and I even went to a Pompeii and Herculaneum exhibition at the British museum. So it was good to be able to walk around the site and know what we were actually looking at. We liked walking through the houses and Roman baths the most.
We spent over 3hrs walking around, right up until the sun wet down and the site closed. We started the walk home and alone the way we stopped off a shop to pickup some food for dinner.
