Berlin has turned out to be one of our favourite places so far!
We spent our first evening eating the traditional German dish of Pizza although it was accompanied by Steins and a starter of Bratwurst! We head off for a midnight stroll around the Brandenburg Gate and Reichstag, before heading back to our excessively cheap beds in a hostel in the former East Berlin (just below the tower in the picture).
Day 2 was spent visiting the German National History Museum, where Michael found himself muttering the word "b******s" repeatedly under his breath and receiving numerous punches from Jenny for his comments about them not making a big deal about the fact they lost the war (sorry that should be WARS). But don't worry, "we only mentioned it once, and we think we got away with it." We then headed to the Berlin Cathedral and the Holocaust Memorial, which in terms of architecture we still don't understand - it's just a load of upright paving slabs! We finished the day with yet more beers, but this time endulged in a proper German meal, whilst watching England stuff Sweden! Jenny received countless fist pumps from the German waiter who was an England fan.
Day 3 in Berlin saw a ridiculously wet and rainy start (Jenny discovered within a few minutes that her "found"/stolen waterproof is not in fact waterproof). We headed to Alexanderplatz for breakfast where we were confronted with the sight of a German lady feeding her morbidly obese child fried noodles as he lay sprawled on his seat. We headed to the Topography of Terror - an open air exhibition on the site of the former SS and Gestapo HQ - where further mutterings of "b******s" followed. Behind the exhibit remains the only bit of the Berlin Wall still intact and close by was Check Point Charlie and an other open air exhibit about the history of the wall. James will be pleased to know our sightseeing for the day was followed by a rather sceptical purchase of Currywurst, but we were not disappointed! We rounded off the day with a German meal of schnitzel and pork with sauerkraut and fried potatoes (with, of course, more beer and a few Mojitos at an outdoor concert we found).
We woke up this morning at 5 to catch our 11 hour train to Krakow, where Jenny was successful in securing a seat - albeit between 5 hairy Polish men - and Michael found himself sat in the aisle for the duration of the journey.
More about Krakow next time (I'm sure you're all weeing with excitement...)
P.S. - Chris Berlin is definitely one for your trip!
