Elective Journal
Hey everyone, Another week gone and lots more stories to tell. Have had a good week it has been pretty busy. This week was Fran’s last week and so we had lots to fit in. On Tuesday night it was one of the german guys thomas’s birthday and so we all went and had take away Chinese and drank wine and beer very English but it was good fine and nice to just relax for the evening. Fran and I went to see one of the families that she had met a few weeks ago as she wanted to say goodbye and their daughter spent hours trying to teach us Fijian phrases whilst we drank Kava she was really sweet and I am going back this week to see them again as they told me when fran goes I must come and see them it is amazing how sweet everyone is here. They wanted to give fran leaving gifts and took one of the mats that was on their wall down to give to her cant imagine that happening in England. On Thursday I did my intro dive the dive team here are great and I really enjoyed it although reckon I must have missed loads of fish as I was concentrating on the complex task of breathing! When we came up after the dive a fish flew into me – which was pretty funny never had that before it came right out of the water and hit me. On thurday evening we went back to selana beach and had a leaving last meal for fran it was the real fiji there family from the village came and sang us songs and we all joined in or tried to and then we all danced and ate. They sang us baabaa black sheep which was pretty funny. They laughed at fran and I as we only had small coconut cups of kava which they call low tide. On Friday night James me and Cassa one of the nurses went to one of the local schools to teach about STIs and HIV it was a really good teaching session and the students asked lots of questions and seemed really keen so I think we might try and go back next week as there is a real need to teach this in schools. The week in the hospital has been good have seen some interesting cases getting quite good at GP type stuff. It was just me and one of the doctors on Friday as the other doctor was away and fran had left and james was diving don’t think I have ever seen so many patients in one day. Then this weekend james and I went to one of the other islands it was so beautiful but very basic bucket toilet which were actually not too bad. We were greeted by a Fijian band who sang the bula song from the beach. I spent the day sunbathing which was great as the weather has been pretty rainy most of the time. In the evening we drank Kava and sang songs – are you noticing a theme! Tonight we are off to Kim’s restaurant for the Sunday night buffet which is great Chinese food. Hope you are all well Take care miss you lots Lots of love Stef xxxx
