Elective Journal
Hey Everyone ,
Well so much to tell you all we have had a very busy few days. Suva was rainy and notr so nice eventhough the raintree lodge was great. We went to meet the medical elective lady in Suva who was lovely and gave us our ID cards and the info to waiver our visa extension so we headed off to immigration and they have added a whole new meaning to Fiji time it took them 3 hours to stamp our passport!!! We went to the market in Suva before we flew to levuka it was great very busy and so much fruit and veg and crabs tied up in bushes of 6 still alive very strange. We then got the plane to Ovalau. Well that was an experience it is just 20 seats and the pilot gave us the safety briefing - a bit bumpy but we flew pretty low so a good view of the islands and coral and it took just 14 minutes. We then got the bus to levuka it took 40 minutes along a small road and we passed through fijian village all the children shouting 'bula!'. When we arrived the town was very quite but the hotel we are staying in is lovely although we decided to move to the dorms where there is a kitchen and at the moment we have the room to ourselves but each of the three rooms takes three people so its great because people move in and out all the time. There is a girl from leeds who has been here for a while now and gave us a few tips before we started. The first day was good very busy we have a lot more responsibility here I did a postnatal clinic and we went on the ward round doing house officer jobs. There are two doctors who run the 43 bed ward and the outpatients which is a general practise and the other daily clinics. Yesterday I admitted a baby with a chest infection - we have to do all the work up cannulation, drug calculations etc so its a good experience. Also did a postnatal climic which was good lots of baby checks. James sutured up this young boys leg it was a really deep cut and he was moving all over the place so he did pretty well. Then today I was in the outpatients seeing patients in the same room as the other doctor and precribing but he is there if you are unsure which is good. They all speak in fijian to the doctors and nurses so the language barrier is much harder than I thought but I am picking words as I go along. They also do deliveries so am hoping to do some over the next few weeks. So far am having an amazing time just what an elective is about and as we walk through the small town the shop owners etc start to recognise us which is really nice there is a really friendly feel about the town. Anyway had better go we are all off to an Expac greeting at the local club to meet those who are living in levuka.
Miss you all
Lots of love
Stef
