Last night we ended up in Chinatown and enjoyed loads of amazing food from a variety of street food vendors (see picture) at prices so cheap it was insane. A box of vegetable noodles cost 10 bhat (20p) and that was almost the most expensive thing we bought. We sampled different fried vegetables, spring rolls in a bag half filled with sweet chilli sauce, sweet corn, pork skewers and my favourite food so far called taro, a deep fried vegetable sort of thing.
After eating we grabbed a tuk tuk and headed over to Khao San road, a lively tourist street full of bars and market stalls. In my opinion it wasn't all it was cracked up to be but we did have a few beers in a bar on the 3rd floor of a building with a great view and Sarah saw her first stall selling scorpions and bugs to eat.
Today was temple day and we headed over to the river to catch a water taxi up to the grand palace. We decided not to go into the palace though and instead went next door to Wat Pho to see the reclining Buddha, a 15m high, 40m long gold statue of buddha lying down. From there we jumped onto another boat and crossed the river to Wat Arun. You can climb up the side of this temple and you get a great view of the river which we did, losing about a kilo each in body weight due to the amount we were sweating by the top!
The flower market was the next stop and after getting temporarily lost in a local fruit and vegetable market we found it. They had flowers of what seemed every size and colour imaginable at prices so low it makes you wonder how they can make any money. The best example of this was that around 2 dozen roses done up in a bouquet was 50 bhat (£1) and that was before you started bartering.
By the time we had got back to the hotel we had been walking for almost 6 hours so we took a well deserved dip in the pool. Tomorrow we are up at the crack of dawn for a bicycle/boat tour around Bangkok and the surrounding countryside so it's an early one for us tonight. Tomorrow evening we are heading for Chiang Mai and will arrive there early Friday morning so wish us luck with that!
