After all this drinking and lots of late nights, I decided last night that I would have an early night so that I could hire a motorbike (moped) today and go out and about and see some of the sights of the island. I had also met an American guy who was staying at the hostel who was also called Peter who said he would like to join me today. So we both booked two bikes with reception and waited for them to turn up. Peter ordered and automatic and I ordered a manual bike.
When the bikes got delivered my bike was the black one and Peter's automatic bike was a fetching pink colour which as you can imagine, he was not very pleased about.
We didn’t really have a route that we were going to follow today, and we only had a map that covered Phuket Town so our route was open to change and we only had the Lonely Planet map which was a bit vague. At least the island wasn’t so big, so it shouldn’t be too hard to get lost.
We headed south and the first thing we came across was a lookout point at the south east corner of the island. Then we headed inland towards the Big Buddha in the centre of the island. We could see the Buddha from where we were so we decided to take the most direct route where we came across a road that we thought twice about driving up because of the big warning sign at the bottom of the hill. We turned back and went another way.
When we got to the Big Buddha we didn’t realise that they were still working on it, but we managed to walk up to the top of the hill where the Buddha statue was and also get a few photos. Looking at the plans of how this complex should look like when it’s finished, I think they still have a lot of work to do here.
Leaving the Big Buddha we looked at the Lonely Planet map and it showed a waterfall close by so we decided to head over to the. We were both very disappointed with what we found. The water falls were more of a trickle than a falls, so much so, that we didn’t even bother taking a photo, it was that bad. Walking back to the bike from the fall we did manage to find a big spider that I can share with you (don’t look if you are scared!!! Ha Ha!).
After the water fall we headed over to Patong to see what it looked like in the daytime as I had only ever seen it at night time. The beach was very nice but the bar area still seemed very seedy so we quickly headed back to Phuket Town.
