It may have been evident from my last post that last week was the end of Camp… which is only half true.
This week I and the other Camp America staff have become 'the maintenance crew' at Camp. It was a relief to not be responsible for kids anymore - that burden was on the MDA staff that had taken over the Camp. Instead, we went about scraping old paint off cabins, painting cabins, moving stuff etc etc… The main benefit to being on 'maintenance crew' was that you had the evenings off!
One night we went to the mall and to the cheesecake factory! Mmmmm…. Cheesecake… And then we decided to take a little trip to the end of Long Island, Montauk. Montauk was classic surfer town, with tourist shops and cute little bars with live music. The lighthouse at the very end of the Island was beautiful and we had an adventure scrambling round the boulders on the edge of the cliffs.
Thursday night was 'the big mans' birthday so we went to an entertainment park: from batting cages, driving range, go-karts, mini-gold, laser tag and BBQ. Although I didn't make myself look a fool on the driving range, the batting cages were pretty intense and very difficult and the parents could only look on in fear (or anger) as 6 grown men raced their karts around their children who didn't know how to use an accelerator.
This week has involved a lot of hard work and frustration, but at the same time been one of the funnies, entertaining and exciting weeks of America so far!
