I was only in Morro de Sau Paulo for a couple of days but by the end, would have liked more time. It reminded me a bit of the Thai islands, where your hostel is located just off from the beach and some of the restaurants and shops have the style of thatched roofs.
The pousada I stayed in wasn't the best for meeting people but I spent my first full day on the beach, reading, listening to music and taking in the sun. The next day however, I bumped into an Aussie guy, Matt, whom I'd met at the hostel in Salvador. He'd just arrived and was looking for a place to stay and decided on one further down the beach. There, we met some other people I'd met in Salvador, so went out that night for drinks at a beach party, and after, one of the clubs.
Before this though, Matt and I decided to do a class in Capoeira, the Brazilian martial art developed by the slaves who were brought over from Africa. It's different from karate as it's more gymnastic and requires some ground-work like handstands and kicking from the ground. Some of the guys doing it were fantastic, one guy in particular seemed to be mixing it with break-dancing. Some of his moves seemingly not effective in a real fight, but impressive nonetheless.
Morro was a cool island and I would like to have stayed longer, but with my flight already booked from Salvador to Rio, I had to leave the island. So, I booked a flight in a Cessna-style plane that went directly to Salvador airport, thus elimating the need to travel all the way across Salvador through traffic by taxi.
