30/12/07 Wet and cold day in Villa Traful therefore we set off to drive part of the 7 lakes route to San Martin de Los Andes. The road was very rough for 80% of the way and 120km took over 3hours. The scenery on the way on the "main" road was stunning even through the rain. San Martin is a very attractive town on the edge of Lago Lacar and a local ski centre; it was well worth a visit.
We chose to return by a different route which was via stone roads. These proved better than the main road! We checked with the local police that the road was OK for the rather basic car provided by Hertz. The scenery was even better than on the way there. One section in Cathedral Valley was truly amazing even if the road wound up the side of a mountain to 4123 feet; our highest so far.
Today [New Years Eve] we are going on a walk to a local view point and then will be spending the evening with Willis's friend Josie and her family. This will be a spit roast of kid around a camp fire. We are providing the champagne and wine. Pictures will appear soon. Good New Year to all our family and friends.
PS - the time changed here today and we are only 2 hrs behind the UK
