Friday 8th February - another great drive through the winding Ruta 9; there is a more direct Ruta 9 but we enjoyed the views of the narrow route. Ruta 9 passed through dense sub-tropical jungle and had some stunning views. We arrived in the early afternoon at another great hotel La Comarca in the village of Purmamarca. The hotel is Adobe buildings surrounded by stunning[ sorry to keep using this word but every corner we turn or view we see takes our breath away] scenery. In the afternoon we drove up the pass on Ruta 52 to the salt lakes at 11250 feet. The scenery is again stunning [see the photos] and we reached our highest point so far at the summit of the pass; 4170 m or 13 682 feet. At this height it is cool, dry and we were easily short of breath. However, further on in the salt lake high valley at 7pm in the evening in bright sunshine the temperature was 26 degrees C; remember we are at the Tropic of Capricorn.
Saturday 10th - in the morning Willis and Gillian went shopping in Purmamarca; dangerous especially for Willis. Ethnic goods are much cheaper in this area and good quality can be sort out. In the afternoon we visited the village of Tilcara where the Universidad de Buenos Aires maintain an excellent archeological museum, garden of local plants and the ruins of El Pucara [a pre-Columbian fortification].
