Wednesday 6th February - arrived late at our smart Hotel Papyrus which overlooks the city of Salta. Now we are in the north west of Argentina, where things are cheaper than in the south, we can afford more expensive hotels.Thursday 7th February - our day in Salta including the highlight of the Museo de Arqueologia de Alta Mountains. This well set out museum houses the mummies of three Inca children who were buried at 6500 feet 500 years ago. The site was excavated in 1999 and the children and the accompanying artefacts were brought down to be investigated and stored in dry freezing conditions [as on the mountain] in the museum. The body of the child on display was moving and the detail and colours of the artefacts were stunning. The children were aged 15 [a girl], 6 [another girl] and 6 [a boy]. They were drugged and put into the holes on the mountain top, an extinct volcano, as sacrifice to the Sun God. This museum is a "must see" and has good English translations. During the day we also visited the cathedral and the Museo Historico del Norte both were worth the visit. After dinner, when there was a tremendous thunderstorm with massive hailstones, we visited a bar for more wine and to listen to traditional Indian music. This was great fun and after a coffee we were back in our hotel by 02.30, a late night for us!
