Arrived at our hotel in Munich, about a 10 minutes' walk from the Bahnhof (train station). Checked into Hotel Monaco, a thoroughly nice place with a lift - thank goodness since our room is on the 6th floor!
Then after a brief rest, headed out to Marionplatz, the city's main square, in order to catch the Munich Walking Tour of the city. The square was by at, but not with shoppers (all the stores are closed on Sundays), but with locals, visitors, musicians, tours, etc.
Our tour guide, Kai, was the second European Asian person we've met on this trip. He's German Chinese with an American accent, but originally from China. Lol! He gave us a very good introduction to the city in our 2 hour walk, and even gave us suggestions for places to eat.
After the tour, we decided to have dinner at one of Kai's suggested restaurant: the Augustine Brauhaus, serving local Edlehoff bier. (the pope's favourite brew b/c it's 'noble beer' or so Kai says. Ha ha. We walked for what seemed like forever b/c the brew house was on one side of the train station and the Marionplatz is on the other. But, we finally got there! We settled upstairs on the patio, ordered two 1/2 litre beers, and ordered the following meat-fests:
Pete: Berkutcherpfandl (mixed pan) - crispy pork knuckle, pork roast, duck quarter, sausages, sampling and blaukraut.
Mimes: Brauneisterpfsndl (Brew Master's Special) - slice of pork saddle, meat ravioli, meat ball, pretzel dumpling, all in a mushroom cream sauce.
Yes, it was *that* much food, and so cheap compared to the prices we'd been seeing in France! Beer is super cheap here too. I think each 1/2 litre was under €3 - like drinking water, except people here really do drink beer like water, and actully frown uppon asking for tap water.
For dessert, the funny waiter suggested Blaubeerfannkuchen, a blueberry pancake with grilled almonds, ice cream and whipped cream. Oh man, good bad mistake for us. It was so good, but it made us even fuller than before! For the record, this thing was not a pancake, but more like a cake that looked like a giant pancake baked in a pan. Groan.
Time to turn in b/c we have an early day at Salzburg tomorrow!
