I stuffed myself with the very good breakfast at the Quality Hotel in Augsburg, then we slowly drove out to Nordlingen.
We went through the Riemlinger Tor and walked straight to St. Georg church to the TI in the Alte Rathouse (old townhall). We climbed the very steep and very narrow 350 steps up the church tower to see a view of city. We side stepped it down the steps with people going up, and listened in on the weekly noon organ concert in the nave.
As we were walking to the Ries (meteor) museum, we stumbled upon a market! The main street in town had stalls of fruits and vegetables set up, so we picked up some apricots, nectarines, and, feeling adventurous, local johannesberen - this amazing red coloured berry. Turns out, they are super sour! But I found out too late! We bought some sandwiches, and what has to be the tastiest strawberry cream cake. Unfrotunately, it ripped through the paper bag it was in, so before the museum, we found a bench and ate the cake with our fingers ;b
Good thing the Ries museum had a bathroom. Nordlingen is a town that is built within a meteor's crater, left upon impact many years ago. The town wall is actually built on the perimeter of the crater, so it's very well preserved. Since the museum does not have English translation, we watched the two 10 minute videos on meteors and craters. Then we left to find walk the town wall.
We climbed up from one gate and 'backyard peeped' through the cross shaped windows of the old town wall. Newer houses were built outside of the city walls, backing into the old city, so we had a very good view of who had a green thumb, and who didn't.
