We arrived in Frankfurt at about 6:30, and parked outside our hotel - the Holiday Inn Express. Pete had booked this room for a very cheap rate (whoo!) and it was a very nice, big room, lots of space, modern bathroom with a spacious shower. We liked it very much for what it was, and we noticed that there were a lot of people in the hotel for business, so the area was safe enough.
We studied the city map and went out for a walk around the place. Frankfurt in itself is very much like Toronto, a big city metropolis by a lake. It was badly destroyed in WWII, and rather than rebuild, it decided to started from scratch. We did half of Rick Steve's self guided tour except for the drug/brothel area, b/c the idea of it kind of scared me. We saw the city's grand train station and the famous financial district. In the financial area, we went up to the 'candy cane' tower to get a view of the city. This is the city's version of Toronto's CN tower, called the main tower. The elevator ride up to the 54th floor was quite quick and ear popping. We got up and did a mini-tour of the financial towers we already saw, as well as the other parts of town we had yet to see.
After the tower, we walked to the opera house, the main shopping drag in town, and to Romerburg, the old town, which was rebuilt in the 1980s. From there, we crossed the river to the more 'artsy' side to find our dinner. The restaurant we were going to was in Saxonhaus, the area across the river from Frankfurt. The area is famous for it's applewine. We went into an area with a bunch of restaurants with courtyards and patios and settled into Klanne Saxonhaus (the little Saxon House), where we had some delicious salad, grilled short ribs, and apple strudel, washed down with Apfelwine. We digested by walking back to our hotel via the river.
