Left St. Jean de Luz this morning for Spain, traveling via an Intermarché as we needed GPL, more difficult to come by on Spain.
A couple of years ago when following the same route there had been a noticeable police presence at the border. We were waived through then but as a precaution this time got the passports ready. Needn't have bothered. No police and no boundary that we saw.
Our introduction to Spain didn't start too well. It would be invidious of me to mention who misread the form of the co-ordinates so I'll just say that we ended up halfway up a mountain on a cart track. A lot of reversing later we managed a 7 point turn in the drive of a friendly Spaniard and regained the main road.
This aire is in a National Park, with tables, seating, barbecues and table tennis available for everyone. And everyone seems to be here. For a fairly remote spot it's surprisingly busy, especially so as it's a Tuesday afternoon, albeit a hot sunny one. I suppose it might be explained because the shops in Spain close in the early afternoon, reopening in the evening thus leaving several hours for sleep or play. Every hour or so a ranger on horseback clip clops past.
There are two restaurant / bars a short walk away. I asked for a beer and a white wine. Both were served in heavy, half liter glasses and, with a complimentary dish of sunflower seeds, peanuts etc the bill was €3.10 !. Not a half liter of wine, of course, but a pretty hefty measure. We are on our own as regards motorhomes.
Thursday, 29th.
If Spain has a national picnic day then it's today. Cars started arriving around 9.00am and a trickle turned into a flood. Cars are parked two and three deep, tables are loaded with food and drink, BBQs are smoking and people everywhere. Now, at 5.00pm, there is little if any abatement. One or two cars have gone but others are arriving. The two restaurants have not opened today and the public toilets have not been open since we arrived.
