14th June 2006 - Day 75
Woke early to a lovely sunny day at last - things are looking up!! Decided to visit Airlie beach's lagoon to sunbathe and catch up on some reading - relaxing day.
15th June 2006 - Day 76
Travelled on from Airlie beach to Rockhampton - a long drive. Set up camp for the night. Went to sleep early and planned to get up at 2am and watch England vs Trindad and Tobago, could wake up though a had a nice long sleep.
16th June 2006 - Day 77
Set off to have a look around Rockhampton - wandered around the river front, popping into the city's art galley which was very interesting. They had an exhibition called "state of play" designed by a local school teacher which involved lots of activities for adults which were very childlike - drawing, painting, cutting out shapes etc - very inventive and fun. We also saw an exhibition by an aussie artist Pro Hart - painting mostly around the outback and his community in Broken Hill. We also sat through a lecture on Hart which was interesting to listern to. Headed out of Rockhampton onto the Town of 1770, stopping off at Callippe which displays examples of historical aussie buildings and artifacts. Set up camp at Town of 1770 - so named because it was when captain Cook first arrived in Queensland. Very small town only 1 bar and about 2 shops but lovely beaches and walks.
17th June 2006 - Day 78
Decided to head off down the coast to Hervey bay, took a walk around Town of 1770 along the beautiful beach and to the tip of the town overlooking the ocean. Drove onto Hervey bay camping at Torquay overlooking yet another stunning beach, walked along the beach as the sun was setting - amazing views of the harbour jutting out into the sea and the sky lighting up bright orangery / red.
18th June 2006 - Day 79
Our first day proper in Hervey bay, weather's not looking good - a bit miserable - which has put us in miserable mood too. So have decided to finally get around to booking not one but two trips. One to Fraser Island and the other to Lady Elliot island on the reef.
19th June 2006 - Day 80
Early start to Fraser Island. Took the ferry to Moon Point to meet up with our 4x4 bus for the tour of the island. Some hairy driving took us through the rainforest to Eli Creek, The Coloured Sands, the Maheno shipwreck and Lake ???, where we had a chilly swim in the freezing yellowy water (meant to be good for the skin). Saw a couple of wild dingoes too!
20th June 2006 - Day 81
Spent the day hanging around Harvey Bay, had a picnic on the beach. Still very nervous about the flight tommorrow trying to put it out of my mind.
21st June 2006 - Day 82
Up early for our flight to Lady Elliot. We caught the tiny eight seater plane in Hervey Bay - we sat right behind the pilot. The flight was scary but still very cool. Saw the coastline all the way up to Bundaberg, weher we picked up more passengers. Very cool , sseing the houses, fields, rivers and all the colours from up high was amazing! Was a little scary befroe reached the island as we went through cloud of rain which meant we couldn't see anything! Then the isalnd appeared out of the cloud like a film and the sky cleared! After a bumpy landing we set foot on the island. We were greeted by Jae, a marine biologist, who was very informative about the island fish plants etc. Got kitted up for the snorkeelling opting for wetsuits as it was looking cold ou there. Boat trip out from the island was rocky and both us a bit sick!! Jumped in snorkeeling which was amazing. Saw loads of fish, different corals and turtles!!! Was good but was abit short, although we were knackered after 1/2 hour. Had a tour of the island then fish feeding before heading home. Had good dinner at The Black Dog - a treat for us and went to bed happry if not a bit drunk!
22nd June 2006 - Day 83
Left Hervey Bay for Noosa, which was preetty chilled . Watched the surfers on the beach as we read our books. Headed south for Brisbane and stopped overnight at a free stop just outside Brisbane (which had ahot shower fantastic!)
23rd June 2006 - Day 84
Took Charlene into Brisbane for her check up, we got to use the internet for free and they gave us a bottle of fizz so things were looking up. Headed into the city for a look round- but spent the day being bounced from pillar to post by travel agents. Anyway thats a long story! After chilling by the riverside called up Paul's cousin Lorraine to see if they minded us dropping by. Arrived an were warmly welcomed by Lorraine, Steve, Jack, Kirsty and Daniel. Stayed over on their floor.
