6th June 2006 - Day 67
Spent the day strolling the beach at Palm Cove. Then headed for Cairns, stopping at a couple of beaches including Clifton beach, Trinity beach and Yorkey's k*** where we saw a few kite surfers catching the strong winds in their sails. Saw the Omen in the cinema that night (the date 6.6.6) which was a good flick. Grabbed a cheap pizza from Dominos on the way home and went to Cairns seafront.
7th June 2006 - Day 68
Went to Cairns Tropical Zoo in the morning to check out their list of inmates including kangaroos, koalas, wombats and crocs. Also their were two little red pandas (non genuine aussies though from Nepal), with their red coats and long tails, like little red raccoons. Headed to Cape Tribulation a couple of hours north of the city. Had to cross the Daintree river on the cable ferry into the national park area. Camped up at the first camp site as it was getting dark in the dense forest.
8th June 2006 - Day 69
Set off to Cape Trib and stopped at several bays on the way. Went for a walk along the Jindalba walk through the rainforest, looked out for the wild cossiewallas (sorry -cassowaries) which look like ostriches, but scarier. In fact we didn't see any til two or three days later much further south in Mission beach. Decided to head back to Port Douglas for the night and pitched up in the town centre. V. posh is Port Douglas!
9th June 2006 - Day 70
Set off after another stroll round PD, on the road south for Mission Beach. Weather was pretty awful, more heavy rain - again. Found refuge in the YHA but all they had for us was a slopey carpark, although the rest of the facilities were good. Met a kiwi who was able to impart his knowledge of Christchurch and the kiwiland.
10th June 2006 - Day 71
Grey and rainy again. Heading for Townsville today to catch the footie (the world loved variety not the aussie rules version). Took us ages to find a pub who were showing the 'soccer', but in the end the game was pretty dull and the result ok.
11th June 2006 - Day 72
To Airlie Beach further south, only after a nice cafe brunch on the seafront at Townsville (about the only interesting part of the city).
12th June 2006 - Day 73
Strolled around the town/resort for most of the day. After a break in the weather, some sun at last, we decided to book a two day boat tour to the reef and the Whitsundays the next day.
13th June 2006 - Day 74
Set off early after not much sleep, to the harbour by bus to catch our boat to the reef. Sea looked rough and the weather was getting stronger. As soon as we got on we were encouraged to take some sea sickness tablets. Anyway to cut a long story short. It got pretty rocky as we went out through the Whitsunday islands and Rach got scared as the waves and rocking got worse and we were told the weather would be worse out on the open ocean to the reef. Anyway a green looking Rach managed to persuade the staff to let us off at Hamilton Island halfway and get a taxi boat back to the mainland. Lucky we were able to get our money back, as I think the money would have been wasted on a very miserable, windy and wet day when snorkelling was limited. Chilled out later in a bar and watched the Socceroos just about beat Japan 3-1 (a replay from the middle of the night b4.)
