1st May 2006 - Day 31
Woke up deciding not to stay in the hotel another night as the fan in our room seemed to switch off half way through the night - which meant we couldn't sleep. Place felt like trying to sleep in an oven. Paul spent the night in shower/toilet/outside on the verandah area, suffering 'Varanasi belly'. Moved onto a more expensive but much cooler a/c hotel. The hotel turned out to be a bit of a disappointment as they didn't seem to serve cold drinks of any kind. Seems you can buy a cold drink from any street seller and their Ice cold but our expensive hotel had no facilities to keep drinks cold!!! Paul crashed out and slept for 12-14 hours straight.
2nd May 2006 - Day 32
Had a lovely restful sleep and recovered from our sickness - thank goodness. Decided to get a rickshaw over to visit the Clarks hotel in a swisher part of Varanasi, which is where Paul's grandfather was born. The hotel is lovely very posh, had brunch by the poolside and regretted not bringing our bathers. Was very hot - 43c - so decided to look around the hotels lobby, which was a/c and packed with restaurants and gift shops. Wished we had stayed here last night as it was very nice - a little haven away from the madness of the city. Hung about by their pool and got feeling of how the other half live. Although we did wanted to experience the real India - it's a little too much all the time - it's nice to relax away from the people and the heat. the receptionist got quite interested in Pauls' story an his grandfather. We posed for pics on the main entrance with the doorman.
Boarded our train to Mumbai for our 30 hr journey. Booked a 2 tier a/c sleeper this time - which is much more comfortable and cool, than the cattle class 3 tier. Had the lower bunks this time, with more space for our bags, pillows and blankets were also a added luxury.
