1st April 2006 - Day 1
1st Day in India. Delhi is very very hot, and very different to any other place we've visited before. Visited Old Delhi and the Red Fort today, and some beautiful gardens to get away from the city. Traffic is chaos there are no rules! - at all!! Cars, bikes and tuk tuks all competing for the same space on the road.
2nd April 2006 - Day 2
After a very relaxing sleep we went to Old Delhi to see the Jama Masjid mosque. Very grand! built on a hill over old delhi. We decided to go up one of the towers for a better view of the city which was quite scary as it was dark and narrow. We also went on to see India gate which resembles the arc de triomphe in Paris, It was designed by Lutyens (Paul's contribution). Sat on the grass along the Raj Path and chilled for a bit, watching the squirrels.
3rd April 2006 - Day 3
Set off from Delhi today by car - a 4 and a half hour journey to Agra home of the Taj Mahal, no scenery as such just motorway and traffic chaos as we went through each town. Visited the Taj Mahal with a guide showing us around and telling us the history of the place - were then left to fend for ourselves !!! The sunset was pretty special and the atmosphere was calm.
4th April 2006 - Day 4
Set off to Jaipur "the pink city", this journey was a bit bumpy the road were in need of some repairs to say the least!!! Arrived in Jaipur in one piece but passed at least two lorry accidents (head on collisions) on the dust track of a road. Saw Fatehpur Sikri on the way to Jaipur which was lovely - a mixture of Chinese and Turkish design. Went out to eat for the evening to a restaurant recommended by the lonely planet "annapurna" to experience our first proper India cuisine!! - which was actually not too hot and very nice (even for a wuss like me)!!!
5th April 2006 - Day 5
Today was a very relaxing day - no sightseeing just soaking up the Indian culture away from the hustle bustle of the city!! Sat in a park in the centre of Jaipur shading ourselves from the heat!!! It must be atleast 35-40c in India right now (too hot for us on occasions)!! Went to see our first Bollywood film this evening - which was not what we were expecting - no dancing and singing - more of a comedy which we found quite difficult to understand as there were no subtitles - oh well its all about the experience!!!
6th April 2006 - Day 6
Off to Pushkar today - its a desert town built around a holy lake. Were met by a "priest" who took us to one of the Ghats by the lake and offered to bless us and our families for a small donation (or not so small in my case - R!!!) Spent the afternoon and evening chilling in a lovely lakeside cafe watching the sun setting over the town - was pretty excellent!!
