Hello,
Once again, alot has changed sinced we last posted a blog entry. A few weeks back now, we went up to Coban area with some of the volunteers from the project. We had a long gruelling 9 hour ride to get there, but we had a fantastic weekend. We visited a beautiful formation of pools called Semuc Champey ( see future pics ), visited a cave, took a white knuckle ride ( in a good way ) on an open top pick-up ride and went tubing down the river. We enjoyed even more as we had made such good friends with the other volunteers. The week after that we spent an extremly relaxing weekend at the Earth Lodge, lying in hammocks, watching one of the volcanoes emit huge plumes of smoke and streams of lava, and watching "the life of brain" on the TV. what could be better?
In relation to our last week at the school, we actually ended up staying an extra week on top. Partly due to lack of volunteers, but mainly down to the fact we couldn´t drag ourselves away from the kids. The last 9 weeks have been brilliant with the kids. Our new last day with kids was actually Friday 14th, which coincided with Dom´s Birthday, Plan Ancianos, a scheme to help and feed the older generation in the communities and also the kids x-mas party. Wow, what a day. All the elderly people came in to collect the food, and they were just amazing people to see, it was very moving. There was lots of dancing from the kids, some traditional, some not, and alot of their parents were there, so it was great to be able to meet them. And the end of the party we then had to say goodbye to most of the 360 children who attend the school. It´s difficult to put into writing, but it was a very emotional and overwhelming day for us both. The evening finished with a great BBQ, but we then had to say goodbye to all the friends we had made over the last 9 weeks :0(
We found the whole experience fantastic, extremly rewarding and a brilliant project.
www.gvi.co.uk , if your interested, this is the people we went with, have a look at the Latin American projects working with children.
