Pete & Pam go Travelling
Left Auckland on 28th. Got a taxi over to Apollo Campervan hire which gave us the cheapest quote. We have hired a campervan for a fortnight for $39 a day!! Its cheap cause its off peak still. We have a two berth van with a shower/toilet, fridge, stove & grill, sink and it comes with all bedding & stuff you need like cooking utensils & crockery/cutlery. Its just such an amazing little van and we are having an awesome time. Always wanted to go around in one of these & its the best!!!
After leaving Auckland we stopped and stocked up on food supplies then headed north to Martins bay. We stopped in a campsite that was run by a South African couple. We got a prime spot on the beach. Went for a walk along the beach and found some cool rock formations. There were loads of small sea creatures stuck to them. Then headed back to van around sunset. It was so nice to open the back doors and you get a wonderful view of the sun setting over Goat Island!
Second day we set off and drove through Whangarei and happened to drive past my uncle & aunts motel, so did a quick stop in to see if anyone was there. All were in and we were invited up for a cuppa. Had a lovely chat and promised to back in a few days time. Drove on up to Paihia - heart of Bay of Islands area. Stopped in a motor camp which had a nice view of the bay. You could also see the Waitangi treaty house on the hill from there. Drove past but didn't go in. Went over to the Haruru falls for a picture stop. Really beautiful round there.
Next day had a look round Paihia centre which is small but quaint - must be pack with tourists in the summer. There is loads of activities you can pay loads of money to go do! Drove on North again and stopped at Coopers Beach for lunch. There were loads of greedy gulls eyeing up our sandwiches through the window!! We just let them look! Drove to Ninety Mile beach and had a short walk up - about half a mile! Then turned round and pressed on to Houhora for the night. Had some cheap beer in a Pukenuni pub and went back to van to cook Chilli & blue cheese mash! Yummy!
Next day drove most of day as we wanted to get down to Dargaville for the evening and had to go over two mountains & a muddy dirt road to get there. Stopped off at Hokianga Harbour for lunch and saw there was some awesome looking sand dunes over the water - good for sandboarding!! Got to Dargaville around 5pm after having driven past the oldest Kauri tree in NZ - it has a base of 13meters in circumferance!! Thats a big old tree!
We are heading back to Whangarei to see relatives & my nana, then going to Rotarua to see mudpools & volcanoes & heading off towards the South Island shortly after that. So will keep you informed.
