Pete & Pam go Travelling
Drove onto Porirua the next day which is a small town just a few km's north of Wellington. Had lunch there & braved walking down into the town. The wind was so strong & the rain was lashing about like nothing else. Both togged up again, we must have looked like a right pair!
In all fairness, Porirua was rubbish. We decided not to spend any time in Wellington as the weather was far too bad. So instead booked a ferry crossing on the Cook Straight to South Island. That was a big mistake!! The ferry was supposed to leave at 1pm, but didn't get into the port until 2:30pm. It then was only supposed to take 3 hours to cross, but we got in shortly after 8pm! I had never experienced anything quite like it. All you saw most of the way was sea - land - sky - land - sea - land - sky! I really felt quite ill after a while. We had some on board movies to try and make it a bit better I suppose, but I'm not sure I would go on such a bad day again! Once we hit the Malborough Sounds area, all of a sudden there was no more rain, the sea was a calm as a still lake, and the scenery was just amazing! For that it was worth the hardship!
Ferry stopped in Picton & we stopped at the first campsite we found - tired & hungry!
