Pete & Pam go Travelling
Stopped at Green & Blue lakes on way to Rotarua - went to viewing platform - then to the blue lake for lunch. It was a lovely day inbetween very wet & windy days.
Parked up at the Rotarua Thermal Holiday Park and walked down to the Te Wakarewarewa Thermal Village. There we saw two geysers - the one in the picture - boiling mud pools, natural thermal pools, a maori carving school & another nocturnal kiwi house which Pete had to drag me away from in the end. They are such cool birds to watch! It was a really good day & we got some excellent video footage of the geysers!
Treated ourselves to fish & chips that evening & then a soak in the campsites thermal pools. Decided we would like to stay another night. Next day we walked out to Rotarua & play three rounds of 18 hole mini golf! It was a tie in the end. Went to a pub for lunch were Pete had an awesome chicken breast burger & I had freshly made seafood chowder. It was yummy! Went back to campsite for another mineral soak combined with a dip in an icy cold pool - then back to the mineral pools until we looked like prunes. Very refreshing!
Drove down to Taupo past the lake & stopped there for lunch. We must have seen about half the population of NZ's sheep on the way between Ratarua & Taupo though, seriously!!
Drove past the three volcanoes in that area, but due to low cloud didn't get a great view of them. Decided to head up Mt Ruepheu & drove up to the ski village - apparently a lot of Lord of the Rings Film was shot around here. We stick around too long at the ski village as the wind was howling around and was soooo cold!! Went back down towards the bottom of the volcano & stopped to go for a short hike out to a waterfall. It was very wet so both togged up in our waterproofs! Expedition leader Pam lead the way & we were well rewarded at the end with a beautiful waterfall. Then back to the warm cosy van & on to Wanganui for the night.
