Friday 6th April
Journal entry brought to you by (a koala hugging) Tami
Today was a great day. We were both pleasantly surprised when the loud boys from the night before checked out amazingly quietly this morning. We had hot cross buns for breakfast to celebrate Easter, and then met some of our new room mates. Then I got simultaneous messages from Luke and Holly about what we were going to do today, and as I was telling Sophie that it sounded like the two of them weren?t discussing it together as they both sent me pretty much the same message, one of our roommates overheard and said ?Luke and Holly? They?re here! They just checked in!? It was so mad, we went to reception and found out their room numbers and went and surprised them. It was like a mini reunion as it had been about three days since last seeing them and that?s a long time in our travels! We decided to all go to Lone Pine Koala sanctuary together, and another guy called Shola was going to come along with us. We?d seen him at Newcastle but not actually talked to him, and met him in ByronBay about a week ago.
We had a lot of fun at the sanctuary, we petted kangaroos and wallabies, and got photos taken of us cuddling koalas. They?re really cute but they do smell a bit and they poo constantly. And they?re really heavy. But they kind of snuggle into you which is really cute. And they hold onto you really tight. Awww!
We then got caught in a really massive rainstorm and had to buy some maxibons to cheer us up. I think that being away from the UK gives you weird and uncontrollable cravings for food. For Soph it is definitely TimTams that spark her plugs now. I seem to be addicted to Maxibons. Luckily Luke and Holly are also in that boat so I never have to eat them alone. Therefore I feel less like a pig.
When we?d caught the bus back to the hostel we decided to go bowling that night as Luke and I had been having cravings since Surfers Paradise. There was a bowling bar in the city, so we booked ourselves in and then went back to our hostel to get ready. A couple of hours and a subway later we headed to the bar, we had at this point accumulated another person to our team, a lovely guy called Chris who was in our room at the hostel. We only planned to buy one originally but the guy behind the counter gave us $3 each off our first game and then said we could have a second for free! So what should have cost $20 each cost only $12. Good going team. Holly decided to wear the largest pair of shoes in the alley ? size 19! We began taking it seriously but after realising just how rubbish I actually am at bowling I began experimenting with different ways to bowl, such as throwing the ball backwards, or Sophie tried lying down. We had such a laugh anyway, I didn?t win either game. Would have totally been different had the rubbers been up. When we?d finished our games, we found that the shopping mall was practically deserted but still open, so we took some cool pictures there, like the 6 of us doing Charlie?s Angels poses, or going up and down the escalators. Soooooo immature but SO fun!
We then started to walk back to the hostel, but we just kept getting distracted! Shola went home, but the other five of us just had so much fun taking photos of random things. We found these awesome statues and posed with them, and generally had one of the best evenings I?ve had in a really long time?.since the Big Backpackers Night Out in fact! Okay I know that was only like three days beforehand. Guess we?re just having lots of good times here! Hope you are all okay back home. Miss you all.
