We drove to Phillip Island when we left Melbourne and stayed one night in Cowes. We stayed at a caravan park right on the beach so we went for a swim in the afternoon which was really nice after a hot day in the car. We didn't go to see the little penguins because we saw little penguins on Penguin Island i WA and it was on late at night. Better to get the kids to sleep in time and have happier kids in the morning.
The next day we drove down to a national park, Wilson's Promontory. A guy that Patrik spoke to at a petrol station as we had just crossed the Nullarbor, told us about it and said it was really nice.
We agree with him! Once again we wish we could do some hiking but it was also nice to just see the parts that we could. There is a huge caravan and camping ground there but only twenty sights are powered so we got an unpowered sight. It still wasn't very cheap though, $59!!!! That is more than we have paid anywhere else. But it was worth it, a really beautiful place. We decided to only stay one night as we couldn't do any hikes anyway. So in the morning Patrik went for a run along one of the easier trails to see if we would make it up there with the kids and prams. He thought we could so after breakfast and packing up we went for a stroll/climb. Some parts were easy and some where a little bit harder being up hill. But we got up to the first viewing platform. And the walk was really nice and the views great. Patrik and the kids stayed at the first platform as I walked up the top where Patrik had already been on his run. I'm glad we didn't try to take the kids up there because it was just rocks and cliffs up there without any fences. Absolutely beautiful though!
Then we drove to Lakes Entrance a costal town. The town was not as cozy as I thought it would be, but it was also overcast and rainy when we got there so it might not be fair to judge it to harshly. We only stayed one night.
We didn't really know which way to drive from here. Should we go along the coast or should we go up into the mountains. Patrik spoke to a couple of people at the caravan park and they both thought the coast was really nice. We were almost convinced to take the coastal road but we decided to go up into the mountains anyway. We figured there will be lots of coast to see later when we go north of Sydney.
We stayed in Bombala one night. The caravan park looked like autumn had just arrived. All the leaves of some of the trees has fallen off. Not sure if those trees where doing so well. The office was located in one of the caravans and the guy who was the manager looked a bit shady. But he was really friendly and helpful, and had really nice handwriting according to Patrik. The tourist information about Bombala said that there were platypus in the river so in the evening after we had had dinner at the RSL we went to look for them. Unfortunately they didn't want to be seen. The area around the river was really nice for an evening walk though.
