Yesterday I went to watch a basketball game. Now, because I have never watched any basketball, although I am vaguely familiar with the concept, I had spent the last two weeks in preparation for this day.
I had been coached on the rules of the game by any guy sitting in the room with me while I watched all the televised games. I can now understand some of the intricacies of the game, the difference between college ball and the NBA game and I also understand the rules about ball possetion and time limits. I am as prepared as I am ever going to be. I have gathered two male advisors who are coming with me to ensure that I can always understand what is going on. I also have some female support to counterbalance the male testosterone that is sure to be surrounding me at the game.
The first thing that strikes me when I enter the stadium is the sheer size of it. A cavernous expanse echoing with the voice of the announcer as it comes over the sound system. There are so many seats that I can hardly see the ones in the shadowy depths at the top of the stadium. Luckily we have seats somewhere in the middle so the players only look like stick men rather than ants! For those who can't see, there are also four huge screens showing the close up version of the game. To complete the breathtaking and unrealistic feeling that is fast overtaking me was the strips of lighting running the length of the stadium. I felt like I was on the set of some futuristic movie! It was so exciting! And I even managed to understand the game and enjoy it (and I'm not a huge sports fanatic!) I spent another day with a huge grin plastered on my face - it seems that I am doing this all the time now! Now I have another all American experience to add to my check list.
