Today I spent the day in the sun with a hammer in my hand. I was on the top of a house helping to build its roof. I was at a habitat house build - my first.
Over the next three days Emily's church has its annual Serve Everybody weekend. The aim of this project is for the church to give back to the community in a way that is constructive and positive. They have identified four areas within the Fort Lauderdale community - habitat for Humanity, poverty & homelessness, public schools, foster care - were there is need. The church then invited its members to give of their time and volunteer at one of the many pre-set projects. For this weekend all six church services have been cancelled and in their place are projects like painting, building and community building. I decided to joint the Habitat project so I spent the day doing roofing and for some reason I was the only girl on the roof. With my tool belt, nails, hammer and pink gloves I felt very professional and ready to work hard.
Sitting on the roof with the breeze blowing through my hair the irony of this situation suddenly struck me: here I am in the land of the rich and the free and I'm building a house for people who don't have housing. By the end of the day I was incredibly grubby and hot but I was also happy. There is something really special about being involved in a Habitat for Humanity project and it definitely something I will do again.
