Have you ever been on a blind date that went wrong? Now, have you ever been on a blind date without realizing (with horror) what it was until half way though? It's horrible.
Let me begin by explaining how I got this point. Before I left for the States, I joined a website for travelers. It is a place where people from different backgrounds and cultures can network. Travelers can get in touch with each other and offer advice or find a place to stay for the night. It is a great website and it made sense for me to join. So, the other day I got an email from another traveler who told me that he lived close to Fort Lauderdale, where I'm staying. After a few emails in which we compare notes about the area and its attractions, he invites me to visit. My initial reaction was hesitant - I am a suspicious South African, after all! However, the website had security measures that verify its members and so some of my cautiousness was eased. Furthermore, I had decided that this year I should use every opportunity that came my way and this seemed like a chance to make a friend, so I agreed to visit (and this is where it all started to go horribly wrong.)
His name should have been my first clue, but not being American, I didn't pick up on that. Because of this, my first horror struck "oh my gosh," only came later. When I arrived I was confronted with a guy who was old enough to be my father - oops! Wasn't expecting that!( and yes I will admit that I am a little naïve and didn't ask his age) On top of the creeping sense of horror I also felt slightly confused. I couldn't understand what someone almost twice my age would be doing inviting me to visit? (yes, I'm naïve.) What could we possibly have in common?!
Instead of just driving straight by, I (stupidly) stopped and got out the car (perhaps because my brain was already frozen in shock!) Instead of getting better the day just kept getting worse. First, I got told about his mail-order bride and how she wasn't a good wife so it didn't work out. It was at about this point that I started to feel really uncomfortable. However, by the third time I had been told that I was pretty, I had worked out that A) he probably thought of this as a date, B) u was totally freaked out, C) gross, gross, gross, gross, gross, and D) I was getting out of here now! It was at this point that my brain finally thawed and I managed to come up with a mildly plausible excuse and made a hasty exit.
While, I certainly had an experience, it was not the one that I was expecting!! I don't think that this is one that I ever want to repeat!
