Today I ate the best burger in America. What makes it so great? Well Oprah and GQ magazine say so, that's why!
The Le Tub Saloon is a rustic bar and restaurant that was hand built by the owner in 1974. He spent four years collecting drift wood and "ocean borne treasures" all of which have been used to create this quaint place. This is where you can find America's number one burger and as it so happens Le Tub is right around the corner from where I'm staying. This was not an opportunity that I was going to miss!
I decided that being in America I would order the "American burger" variety offered on the menu. Forty minutes later my number-one-American-burger has arrived. This is more than I expected. It is huge! But this is no fast-food, McDonalds burger! This is a real burger - as they should be made! I pick up my burger to inspect it. It looks divine, but then a thought occurs to me. So I cautiously lift my food to my mouth (as a test run) and I discover that there is no way that this is ever going to fit in my mouth - even with my mouth stretched wide. When I lift the top off the burger to possibly take one of the patties out so that it will fit, I discover that this is in fact one patty - "oh, I know many South Africans who would love that!" So I try a different tactic - if I take one side of the bun off perhaps it will fit into my mouth then? This doesn't work and I can only imagine the consequences of trying. So that leaves me with only one other choice - the flimsy, plastic knife and fork. They don't look like they can hold up under the pressure of such a big job but I decide to give it a try anyway (I'm getting pretty desperate by now.) They work! Obviously Le Tub has found sturdy plastic utensils just for this.
First bite…
Ummm, divine! I will never, ever eat a fast-food burger again! The only problem now is the size of my stomach! I can't imagine that Oprah could eat all this - although, you never know!
As Alan Richman of GQ says, "The hamburger is a symbol of everything that makes America great. Straightforward, egalitarian, substantial, and good-natured, it is also a little bloody at times." I am going to focus less on the blood and enjoy America as much as I enjoyed my burger!
