Happy Easter!
So we left you with the though of us picking the New Zealand delicacy of Fejoas with hopes of finding an Apple picking job...that is sort of what happened, maybe.
We turned up at the orchard wandering around looking for the precious fejoas, looking forward to an easier day of work - boy were we wrong! Turns out we were picking Fiji apples so we kind of got what we wanted, and learned a valuable lesson at that; apples taste good, but pick bad!
To be able to keep a picked Fiji apple, it has to be of a certain size, no problems here, but it also has to be at least 60% red - pretty difficult given that these apples had barely no solid patches of colour!!!
Basically, we get paid by the crate you fill up - and rather than going through all the details of how bad we were at it, I'll give you a comparison!
We, a pair, filled 4 crates up ourselves in 7 or so hours - you might think that's pretty good; you're wrong!
A couple of chaps from Tonga picking 17 crates between them in the same time, so simply put, we are not proficient in the art of picking apples!
We returned to our beloved (raise my eyebrows) kiwifruit the next day, which was heavenly in comparison to apples - until we met the hell-b**** of a supervisor, and worked a full 10 hours under broken canopies, horrible humidity and stupid conversation! In terms of the stupidity and to answer your question, yes; they were French!
So after Jenny literally crawled around for a while picking fruit, and I had the urge to throw the said fruit at the supervisor, we went home and decided we were done with all of this stuff - enough is enough!
The weather has turned to rain and gloom the last few days, the waves down on the beach are pretty aggressive, and that meant basically no work for us even if we hadn't have quit - but we didn't really do much else!
We did attempt the proper Quiz at the same pub on Wednesday..we finished bottom - but who cares about that?
We took a drive to Hastings too, about 10 miles down the coast, with the idea of spending a few hours there to see it before we lost the chance - we wouldn't have missed much!
We spent a good hearty 35 minutes walking around what seemed to be the longest, but most boring, high street ever known and gave up, went back to the Hostel and started watching Homeland!
To get you right up to speed now, it's Sunday night, the end of the Napier and Hawkes Bay chapter! Tomorrow we are heading to Wellington, to spend 3-4 days in the capital before the South Island.
Our journey is progressing quicker than we expected but we are loving every minute - I'm sure I'll love it even more after we see the inside of Bilbo's house in Wellington :)
We went to see Captain America 2 this afternoon with our kiwi picking buddies from the hostel, and its safe to say we will miss talking to Kai and Micho after we leave - really good people who are so easy to get on with!
The film was good too for those wondering...just make sure you watch it past the credits!
Right, Jen is watching Glee so I'm going to go and hide myself in a pillow, crying. (Even though I secretly like it)
Goodnight and Kia Ora!
