Saturday 10 November. 7c Snow on the wall
Up before the 6am alarm as Mum was snoring her little head off. No drinks for her tonight!
Currently l'm sitting on the bus waiting for Mum to get on board. This morning we're heading off to the jade factory where we'll see carved jade. I'm not into jade but it will be interesting to have a look around. Afterwards we head to the great wall which is about 50k's from the hotel.
You know how l said l wasn't really into jade….we…eel….l've just spent $600 on a jade bracelet. I have to wear it all the time and it will give me good health, which is why l bought it. So that's it now, nothing else for me. Now we are on our way to the Great Wall. It's pretty cold and it's raining so l guess the view is not gonna be all that good however just to be walking on it will fufill my dreams. The wall was built 7th century BC and is the largest wall in the world, but l guess you guys already knew all that.
Oh my god, Oh my god, Oh my god, Oh my god, Oh my god people…..that wall was bloody hard work!!!! Mum stopped half way to the first post, l stopped at the first post and Deb conquered the wall. Woo hoo! She said it started snowing up there and had a pretty good view even though the rain and cloud covered a lot of it. There were about a million people walking along the wall….we looked like a row of brightly coloured ants. I'm so glad we got to see and climb this magnificent wonder.
I'm still writing this at the back of the bus but now we're on our way to lunch. I'm betting we have Chinese again! Yep, it was Chinese at a place called the friendly store, and it was one of the first franchises in China. Upstairs is the restaurant and downstairs is this big, huge market type of place. So after lunch we kinda went shopping, again! With lunch they gave us a small bottle of Chinese alcohol to share around the table and it's served in these miniature goblets (l'm talking itsy bitsy here) and the reason for that is because its 56% pure alcohol, so Mum chucks back two of these goblets, phew…..puts hairs on your chest that's for sure . This lunch wasn't too bad but everyone agrees that the first lunch we had as a group has been the best so far. So now we are on the way to the Olympic area and the Birds Nest. I don't think we'll hang around there too long as it's still raining. I only walked far enough to get a picture of the Birds Nest and a building opposite that which looks like a dragon before calling it quits and heading back to the bus as it was raining heaps and not much fun. From there we went to experience an oriental foot massage which l did not enjoy. Firstly we had to soak our feet for 10 minutes in a tub of water which had a bag of Chinese herbs in it and was 38c which was bloody hot! Then in comes all these people who sat in front of us and massaged our feet. While they were doing this, doctors came into the room and read or palms and told us what was wrong with us & how we could fix it by buying all these natural herbs. They conned mum into buying the stuff and when she got the receipt it was over $800 Australian dollars so she said she wanted a refund. After talking with the rest of the people on the tour we realized we'd been conned as they were basically telling us all the same thing! Anyway we hopped back onto the bus and were driven to a restaurant for dinner. We had Peking Duck tonight as well as an array of other dishes. I've never had Peking Duck so l was eager to taste it but also a little apprehensive. l did enjoy it but wouldn't go out of my way to order it again. We arrived back at the hotel around 7.30pm and arranged to meet a few of the girls later for drinks. Deb didn't join us and opted to stay in and read a book.
