14th June-
Slow start to the day as am trying to decide what to do today that isn't going to be covered on our walking tour tomorrow with the topdeck group. Visiting the national archeology museum is the best choice and I can walk from my hotel.
Walked out towards the museum and started to get an overall vibe that the city was a bit down on itself. There is graffiti everywhere! It covers any bit of wall and this not graffiti art this is just people tagging the area. The buildings and footpath look in poor maintenance, loose pavers and holes in the road. Cracks and markers over the buildings give off a feeling that the city is not at it's happiness and give that general impression of neglect and maybe even as far as too say poor.
Stopped at the hairdressers for an interesting eyebrow space experience. The women had the quickness tweezer skills ever.
Already after just that short maybe 15 min walk to the museum I am hot... The sun is super shinny and with it reflecting off all the building and lack of ocean breeze it is the hottest weather I have been in so far.
Inside the museum there are hundreds of thousands of artifacts from 10th century BC untill now. The gold death mask of Agamemnon was one of the highlights. Walked around but was finding it hard to be excited about much of what I was seeing. I fear that I maybe have seen so many artifacts and old ruins over the last few weeks that I just can't enthused about them.
Walked back to the hotel for a nap and break from the heat.
Feeling more refreshed and motivated I headed out for a bit of a walk. Wondered along past some amazing looking Greek delis... I am in Greece so they are probably just delis, but filled with delicious looking food. walked through a but of a food market and meet my new best friend Dimitrios. He was walking around with me for a bit and wanted to have coffee together so I can meet locals and talk about Athens... But I wasn't sure if that is really all he was meaning in a good natured way or if he was then going to demand 100 euros for acting as my personal guide. Sometimes is annoying having to always assume the worst and say no.
Contuined on walking through to the monastiraki flea market. Wondered along and was grateful to be able to just walk and look at the shops without been hassled to by something and yelling out how they have great prices after turkey.
Was getting hot and late so headed back to the hotel via a slightly different route. Noticed a lot of hardware and more type stores but not sure how busy they are as a lot of building look like they could use some maintenance.
Relaxed in my hotel room for a while waiting for my group meeting for the start of my next topdeck tour around the Greek islands.
We meet at 5pm and spent an hour or so meeting each other and talking about the tour and what to expect.
We are a group of about 27 with 20 girls. It is a broad mix of people from different ages and countries.
We headed out for dinner with a group of 8 from the tour. Shared this amazing mixed platter of food.
Walked back to the hotel rather then taking the metro as it is such a nice night and needed to walk off the enormous meal just eaten. There was a political rally at omonia square we walked through. They were peacefully gathered and just listening. There was a light police presence. Got back to the hotel with no problems and headed to the rooftop bar for a quite drink admiring the view out over the acropolis beautifuly light up at night.
