Noy's 4th Walkabout
The first sightings of the Southern Alps were dour, there was a lot of cloud over them and as we got closer to our first "base" it started to rain and get colder - welcome to the other side of campervanning! We hooked up the electricity OK but found that we couldn't get the gas to work, so we had to use the kitchen facilities on site for our first cuppa! Nights are COOL on the road but thanks to electric hook ups and a good little heater in the van, we soon come to life in the mornings! We've invested in two extra pillows and a blanket to counter the cold in the early mornings. It doesn't freeze but it's "parky"!
During the Saturday all our family had called Jill for a round of birthday greetings but playing rummy and eating some biscuits and cheese may not have been Jill's idea of a birthday supper! Sunday morning was bright and clear and we prepared for the day with some cereal and a coffee before heading for the base of Mount Cook. The weather turned against us but not before some stunning views at Lake Tekapo where The Church of the Good Shepherd can be found, built in such a way that worshippers can see past the cross on the altar straight up the Lake to Mount Cook ON A FINE DAY...............but not while we were there! The autumn colours have been absolutely radiant and we hope some of the photo's we've uploaded do them justice and give you pleasure.
Travelling down to Dunedin we got no views of Mount Cook, even in clearer weather, but the "city" of Oamaru turned out to be a real gem. Not only are there penguins but the people are fiercely proud of their heritage. This was the second settler's port and the buildings that date back to their earliest days are not only interesting Victoriana but also in very good condition. We watched the penguins come ashore at dusk (no photos allowed) and on Tuesday morning cruised around the town before heading to the Yellow-eyed Penguin colony and the Moeraki Boulders, as they're called, just giant marbles really. Lots of love till Richard's allowed back on the computer!! R&J xx
