Noy's 4th Walkabout
Napier is a lovely city, improved by the sunshine we've enjoyed for the past two days! The photos will give you some idea of the "Art Deco" buildings all around us, resulting from the worst earthquake in NZ's history back in 1933. It was the age of Art Deco and the city has made sure that it has all been kept in pristine condition. Today (Tuesday) has been our second day here and we managed to visit a winery and add Hawkes Bay wines to the growing list of ones which we actually KNOW where they come from and their nuances.
The earthquake not only flattened the city but it forced the ground UP 2 metres for several miles around. it emptied a lagoon (where the airport now stands!) and we've tried to show, in the photos, the drama of cliffs being left two kilometres INLAND and a shipping beacon (type of lighthouse) now stranded in the middle of a field!
Tomorrow we head inland to Lake Taupo (in the pouring rain, we're reliably informed!) and the next stop after that will be the famous Rotorua. More fomr there if we get a good link (like here!). Lots of love from us both - Richard & Jill
