Noy's 4th Walkabout
The leafy suburbs, an "Oxford" and "Cambridge" side to the River Avon, clean quiet streets, a massive park and botanical gardens, 18C and sunny - it must be Christchurch! What a place! Thursday we had a bit of a walkabout in the city (including the famous Hagley Park), walked by the River Avon but didn't do the punting bit they recommend. Then off to the Port Hills. We'd read up a bit but had not really prepared ourselves for the first view into the volcanic crater that formed Lyttleton Harbour - just amazing! We took a gondola to the summit and supped the view and a coffee while watching the weather changing around AND BELOW us! Cold winds blew in off the Pacific, forming a cloud mass that threatened to envelop us, then, just a soon as it came, it went, leaving the signature of New Zealand (a long white cloud) hovering over the harbour. We found that their restaurant (called "Gondola") was open at 18.00 so stayed for a meal............one of the best meals of our life! (Crab Soufflé, Gravadlax, Canterbury Lamb, Duck and a Tropical Fruit soup, washed down with a cheeky Pinot Gris from the Canterbury wine region. Caught an ordinary bus (MAN, of course!) back to the centre of town and our hotel. If that was what everyday in New Zealand was going to be like then WE LIKE IT HERE! Have just realised that all the photo's of Christchurch DID NOT UPLOAD. Sorry - will rectify later!
