Noy's 4th Walkabout
The last postcard referred to photos that we were unable to upload due to a poor internet link. Today we've made another attempt, hopefully more successful! Yesterday we duly rode on the "Shotover Jet" (see photo, which is actually a photo of a photo!). Check their website out for more details of the thrilling ride we had in the hands of a very experienced pilot. Unfortunately it was raining which added to the blasting our faces got - at least we felt well and truly enervated by the time we got off! We then went up the obligatory gondola and had lunch at the Skyline restaurant, which was very pleasant and similar (but not as good!) to the one in Christchurch. The views were probably more awesome in Queenstown but the photos probably don't do it justice! By the way, we know that one or two photos did NOT upload correctly, will put this right on next visit to the internet.
We left the town behind in the late afternoon sun, which came out briefly to say goodbye, then up over the Crown Range (a very high climb which the VW didn't like too much!) to Wanaka. Here the air is more crisp and we know we're back in the high country; the camp site is on the side of a mountain overlooking the lake across to yet MORE mountains and is far superior to the cramped conditions we were in at Queenstown. It's 09.00 as we write this and we have a long drive ahead, across the Haast Pass, onto the famous West Coast and up to Franz Joseph glacier, about 300 kilometers. More from there or somewhere further North next week, our LAST week in the South Island. Lots of love from both of us, Richard and Jill xx
