After we left the synagogue, we walked to the Danube and walked along one of the prettiest rivers in Europe. The city has grown back admirably after the Second World War, with a good mix of old and new buildings, with a lot of green space as well.
Walked north along the Danube until we reached the cathedral like Parliament building and a memorial commonly referred to as 'shoes'. There, a number of bronzed shoes mark the spot where, in 1944, Hungarian Nazis drove Jews to the edge of the river, made them remove their shoes, then shot them to have them fall into the Danube. Again, a very heavy sight, one that emotionally is very hard to deal with, even nearly seven decades afterward.
After this, we made our way back to the hostel, stopping to look at the last remaining monument to the Soviet liberators of the city. All other Soviet monuments were removed after the fall of communism and taken to a single park outside of the city, which we plan to visit on the 8th.
Also stopped to enjoy some yummy goulash with noodles! Excellent!!
