Nice way to spend a day! These grapes will end up in a bottle of Veuve Clicquot.
I was picked up at 7.45am from my hotel and joined a group of 5 other Australians for a day tour to Champagne. Our first stop was in Vezernay to see the vineyards of Bollinger, Louise Roederer, Veuve Clicquot and Moet Chandon. There are no fences - just a little dirt path between each vineyard - all happily co-existing on the hard chalky ground. We visited a small Champagne maker, Jean Yves de Carlini who explained the whole process to us during a tour of his champagne house including a lift underground to his cellars carved out of the chalky ground - retains a constant temperature all year round around 10 degrees with no need for cooling so perfect conditions.
We had lunch in a typical little French restaurant in Reims and then a tour of Reims cathedral before a visit to Tattainger champagne estate where we visited a part of the vast caves where the champagne is stored.
I was not feeling strong and unfortunately was not able to make the most of the champagne tastings which was very disappointing but I did buy a bottle which I will enjoy with friends in Sweden.
