During the night it had rain heavily and lots if roads in colombo had flooded, so our journey to Kandy on train could be a problem. On the train towards the main station we met a local man who had family in Brighton, he was chatting to is about lots of stuff and warned us of the hot curries which we have yet to experience! He took us to the ticket booth when we got to the main station and helped us buy our ticket. With all the rain the train journey inland to Kandy from the main station was delayed for 2 hours, so lots of waiting around for us... We kind of get the feeling we should get used to it.
When the train did arrive it was blind panic to get on, locals grabbed train doors as it pulled up and hopped on! Now imagine two British people with big backpacks politely making there was on with the crowd... It was mayhem! Sadly we only got one seat due to our manners, thanks parents for making sure we learnt those!! It was a scenic journey passing through farmland mountains and traditional white painted railway stations.
We finally arrived at Kandy feeling like we could conquer the world.
So we decided we had enough energy and expertise to navigate ourselves to our hotel, which we already knew was up a big hill. But this didn't put us off after only having a small bread roll for breakfast! So we set off up this hill, passing amused locals and keen tuk tuk drivers who asked if we wanted a lift. We knew we were going to get their OURSELVES so we continues up the hill dehydrated, hungry and drowning in sweat.... Sadly we didn't make it by 'ourselves' after getting lost on the roads a kind tuk tuk driver gave us a lift for free. We were only a few minuets away but had been walking in the wrong direction! Can't claim that we are experts just yet.
The hotel was basic but it had a lovely balcony looking over Kandy. We unpacked, showered and headed back down the hill by foot because we knew that way now :).... No we didn't, we got lost again and hailed for a tuk tuk into town. We grabbed a bite to eat and tucked in using our hands, as that seems to be the way not a knife and fork insight! Thanks again parents for teaching us how to use them correctly, great helped that's been!! We headed back up to our hotel by tuk tuk, but our driver had no idea where our hotel was so WE instructed him... And we got there!! Looks like it goes in in the end, good job we are here for 3 nights.
