SLOVENIA, SLOVENIA, SLOVENIA! What a beautiful, beautiful country you are. How this place is not promoted more in the UK I really don't know. We returned to Slovenia from Trieste to visit Lake Bled and surrounding area for 2 nights, on our way to Salzburg. Our drive from Trieste took us through more breath-taking scenery, and snow, before bringing us to Lake Bled - just perfect! Lake Bled, because of its outstanding scenery, had attracted some tourist trappings: bars, hotels etc. But whilst it may be understandably a little over-crowded in the height of the summer, we had hit it just right.
A 6km walk around the Lake was a great opportunity to stretch our legs. There is a lot of skiing in the region and I should imagine it is a lovely place to come and ski because of the setting.
Chinese pork for dinner tonight before tomorrow's adventures.
Day 2. What do bears do in the woods - who cares; just make sure we don't come across one. Didn't even think about it but in the morning we took a cable car from the lake up the mountain. When we got out there was about 8 inches of snow as far as you could see. It was like we had walked into Narnia! Then we spotted a very large paw print in the woods which we understand is a bear print. Apparently, there are bears in the woods (and wolves) but no one told us that. Still we managed to have a winter walk without needing to adopt a David Attenborough pose.
Next we decided to go to a local waterfall. What I didn't realise was that I was going to require Olympic level fitness to climb the hundreds and hundreds of steps up a mountain to get to it. Get to it we did though. Was it worth it - course it wasn't - its just a bloody waterfall!
At least by early afternoon we had had our exercise for the day and as the sun had now arrived in clear blue sky we returned to our campsite to bask and relax......and blog.
