Back once more to Buenos Aires, the gruesome foursome were up for some high jinx and general capers in this fine specimen of a city. The Sabatico, Red Door, Krakow, vino tinto and steak steak steak! As Kev and Claire were yet to visit the Argentine capital we embarked on a shameless city tour and Kev finally managed to get his South American football fix...
So the Red Door - one of Buenos Aires most happening bars (well, that week anyway) and the last night out with the Brightonians. We unintentionally met some football hooligans and expressed our joint love for Diego Maradona (yeah right), discussed how ridiculous the Falklands War was and thrashed them at pool. By the generous hugs and Argentine man-hugs we decided thy appeared to like us.
When I say last night out, I actually mean the last night out for a drink, as the following night we went for our farewell meal. Adan had to give it a miss so the three of us headed over to Palermo, home to some of the city's finest eateries. We didn't have a particular restaurant in mind so instead wandered around until we found something that appeared to suit our needs. This was a good stratergy as we found a lovely, rustic mid ranger and tucked ourselves into a corner. The waiter basically told us what we were eating rather than let us choose and you should have seen Kev's face when those perfect streaks were brought to our table. Best described as humbled excitement, like putting down a birthday cake in front of a five year old. I wished I still had my camera.
The following day the other three left for Puerto Madryn whereas I had my mind set on another week of Spanish lessons. I had enrolled in a Spanish school not far away in Congresso and having completed a placement exam I was most impressed when they decreed me an intermediate learner. Progress made! For the first time lessons entirely in Spanish, I think I might crack this one day! However, the week was not all study for I had made some friends at Sabatico. We ventured out for overpriced Vietnamese food (stick to the steaks I say), cooked for each other finally, when the studying was out of the way, had a traditionally debauched Buenos aires weekend. Touche!
Next stop for me was Purto Madryn, about halfway down the Atlantic coastline, stopping off point for Peninsula Valdez and the cacophony of wildlife to be found there. As we were nearing the end of the Southern Right Whale season the timing was perfect, and add to that colonies of penguins, elephant seals and the outside chance of some Orca I was in for a wildlife spectacular. Luckily Bruce and Lucy, or collectively Bruce Lee, whom I had met in Buenos Aires were there too so we took a tour around the Peninsula. Our luck was in as all the above mentioned critters were on display, and the whale watching was much better than that done in Ecuador. No Orca though!
