Woke up to no rain which was a good sign but when walking to the toilet block realised it was still very overcast and could rain soon. Boo. With tours limited due to the weather we begun to think of other ways that we could go to see Uluru as we didn't pay all this money to come here and not see it!
We went to the tourist info centre and it was like a museum of all the local animals, stuffed versions, including a stuffed Kangaroo and spiders, massive spiders! Bit creepy! We moved on to another visitors centre which was more what we were looking for, you could book tours, helicoptors and hire cars. We got some costs for the hire companies and Thrifty offered the best deal. He said he only had one small car left but it was dirty so would give us a discount - bonus.
It was raining pretty hard now and with tours being mega expensive, even for just a bus there and back plus chances of them being cancelled, we figured hiring a car and doind a DIY version of the best tours was going to be our best option.
We booked to pick the car up later in the day as then we have it for 24 hours, giving us more drive time tomorrow. We headed back through the rain to our cabin and had some lunch. We were getting boared so decided to go for a walk and much to our surpirse we saw blue sky between the clouds that were beginning to go - yay!
It continued to clear up in hardly anytime at all it was blue sky and burning hot sunshine, just how the desert should be! We thought it was best to not waste anytime so went to pick up our hire card early. We got a Hyundai Getz - a bright red one, for 64A$. It had also been cleaned and still got the discounted price, score!
Off we went! Nick navigating and me driving. Seeing Uluru and blue skies was amazing, really showed the strong colours. When we got to the entrance of the National Park we each paid 25A$ for a 3 day ticket. We got some magnificent views on the drive, pulled over numerous times for photos, another plus for driving ourselves.
We first went to the Cultural Center to see the art and learn more about the history. We then headed to the Mala Walk. We parked up and did the walk around this area of Uluru, getting amazing views and photos. Whilst walking we saw a lizard lol, oh and Nick had a fly fly into his mouth, luckily spat it out in time so didn't swallow the b*****. When we got to Kantju Gorge it was alive with frogs! They were so loud, croking and singing. It was amazing how loud it was for just frogs! They sounded like sheep.
We made our way back to our awesome lttle car and drove to another area to do the Kuniya Walk, again beautiful. We saw lots of Aboriginal Rock paintings on both walks, they were amazing and so colourful. We also got to see the very very rare site of water running off Uluru.
It was so hot now, hard to believe it had ever rained. I heard a lady at reception say earlier they'd had a drought for the last 7 years here so they love the rain! Next we drove back to the sunset viewing area. The sun ended up behind the only cloud there was in the sky - bloody typical, so it just got darker around the rock as there was no sun shining onto the rock to create the colour changes, such a shame but Ce la Vi.
Headed back to our cabin getting some great views of Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) on the drive back. The sun setting in the right way for them, with no clouds blocking it.
Early night tonight as going to be up at 4am to drive out to see Uluru at sunrise tomorrow.
