We arranged for one of the shuttle bus services to pick us up at 8am to get to Perth Airport for our flight to Ayers Rock. The bus took forever as we were the first pick up so had to stop at loads of other hostels and hotels.
Our plane was tiny but still a Qantas - smallest plane either of us have ever been on. Flight took about 2 and a half hours. Before landing they announced it was raining!!!!! Hardly ever rains in the bloody outback and now we're going the heavens open - typical!!
Landing was dodgy and scary. When we made our first attempt to land we were so close to the ground and about to touch down and all of a sudden the pilot pulled up and we were basically taking off again!! We got back up so high so quickly! After much swaying and circling they announced they didn't have enough visual to land, he left it a bit late to change his mind and go up again! On the 2nd attempt he was able to land, we thought we were landing on the red sand but tarmac did appear just as we were touching down.
There was no conveyabelt, we just had to take our bags off the trolley cart thing. It was so weird being in the deset when it was raining. We got a free transfer to the Ayers Rock resort. The driver asked which hostel at the resort we were staying at, when Nick said we're staying at the campground he laughed and said "you're guna have fun, it's flooded" !!!! Sheer panic kicked in but decided if it was that bad when we got there we'd upgrade to a hotel. But we got here and it was fine, wet so the sand was all crapi but not bad enough to upgrade to an over priced hotel.
We are staying in a cabin, it's alot like a caravan. We have a kitchen which is such a plus as can keep eating cheaply. It is a shared toilet and shower block, it's a bit scary down there - big gap between the walls and roof so easy access for the bugs!! As you walk in there's a poster on the wall that says "What to do if you see a snake" implying there is a high chance you will!!
We had a walk about, saw some rabbits doing what rabbits do best!!!! Went to the shopping area of the resort to the supermarket - stocked up on grub for our 3 day stay. But they didn't have carrier bags, was fun carrying all that back!
It is very wet so nothing to do, glad we bought a pack of cards with us now! Nick's been craving mac and cheese so attempting an improvised version of that tonight. Tours are all depending on the weather so got to go day by day really, not going to pre-book anything.
Our first glimpse of Uluru was from the coach on our transfer in, it was looking very moody with black clouds all around it, couldn't even see the top of it! But still a spectacular site.
