After brekkie this morning, the boys were off to get parts to fix Steven’s battery/alternator issue. After coming back with the parts they quickly had the car back on the road.
The Barnes’ and the Pickering’s’ were off to the Perth Zoo. We arrived at about 12:00pm. It is located in the city and is surrounded by office buildings. We couldn’t believe the Entry Fee was only $22 each (a fair bit cheaper than Australia Zoo!). We got our maps and set off for the African section first. We saw African Painted Dogs, Meerkats, Giraffes – including a baby giraffe, rhinoceros and many other amazing animals. The grounds are beautiful and the enclosures are huge. After lunch we went to the Asian section and fell in love with the Elephants. We got there just at the right time to see the keeper feed one of the elephants while she was having a bath. She performed many tricks including standing on her back legs and spraying us all with water. William was mesmerised. We could have watched it for hours. There were a lot of monkeys and apes, including newborn twin pygmy marmoset monkeys. They were just too cute. They had a lot of Orang-utans also, some with babies apparently but we didn’t catch a glimpse of them. We went through the Australian section quite quickly as we were running out of time, but we still managed to pat a kangaroo and catch a glimpse of a wombat. The Echidna’s were all asleep in a burrow that had a Perspex front on so we could see in. We have no idea how many were in there, they were all bunched in together and all you could see were their quills; we think there were at least 6 or 7. We walked out just as the keepers were announcing the zoo was closing at 5pm. It was a great day and would easily go back again.
We stopped in at the shops on the way home for supplies. William spent the entire night talking about the Elephants and even had to watch the video a few times before going to bed. I don’t think he’ll forget about them anytime soon!
