Woke up this morning after the coldest night we’ve had. William came into bed with us after falling into the suitcase next to the bed; however we still managed to sleep in until 7.30am. After brekkie and a half hour search for one of Ben’s toys that William had thrown into a tree, we were on the road at about 9.30am. We had our biggest day of driving, ended up doing around 680kms. We came through the Nullarbor National Park and had lunch at the Nullarbor roadhouse. There were signs everywhere saying to be on the lookout for wild Camels, Wombat and Kangaroos as it obviously isn’t fenced. Unfortunately all we found was a dead wombat and 2 eagles – which are absolutely huge compared to the crows. The road was very straight and the ground fairly flat, the occasional gentle rise and fall with only little shrubby bushes and grass on the ground. When you look out to the left (south), it looks as through the ground could go forever into the horizon, where in fact there are cliff faces only a couple hundred metres away. We stopped at a lookout an looked over the Great Australia Bight and got a closer view of the massive cliff faces and thed most beautiful coloured water. It was very windy wherever we stopped and a little on the chilly side.
Everything is expensive along the Nullarbor, We paid over $2/l for petrol at one point and Neil paid $6 for a can of XXXX Gold.
After coming through the quarantine gate at Border Town and having to give up more food and having to scrape dirt off our shovel we came down the Eucla Pass, the view was magnificent overlooking the plains and ocean. Very spectacular - whoever says there is nothing to see along the Nullarbor must have their eyes shut.
We were going to stop at Eucla for the night, however as we gained 2 hours when we crossed the border into WA, we decided to push on to the Madura Caravan Park, which was 180kms past Eucla. We arrived at about 6pm local time and had an early dinner and bed.
William was surprising good in the car today, not throwing of things out the window. Considering he has been spending long days in the car and getting over being sick he’s been pretty good.
We are hoping to get to Norseman tomorrow, which is another big day. Luckily the cars are running smoothly, except Stevens ignition is playing up but is manageable,.
