Yesterday we left Amiens and drove north to Fromelle. We visited the new war grave there was only opened a couple of years ago. The bodies of the soldier had been buried in a mass grave in the woods near the new cemetery and were found by a history teacher who had been searching for these soldiers for years. Some have been identified by DNA and now they are in a Commonwealth war grave just near the town's church. It is another beautiful setting and a very moving place to visit.
About 4 km away is the cemetery at Fleurbais where Matthew's other great uncle is buried. Private Anthony Shanahan was killed in 1916 aged 26. This cemetery is quite large but many of the graves have no name but say "a soldier known unto God".
After paying respect to fallen soldiers and being completely moved by the experience of visiting the Somme again we headed off to find our accommodation in Brugge. More about our stay there soon.
