- What I do at work
I am volunteering at a legal service agency where people who can't afford lawyers come in and we help them find lawyers for their cases. So a person comes in, meets with one of the staff, and her case is started—ie we get all their info: the opposing party, what has happened, what they want to happen, court hearing dates, etc… after that file is entered and the person has paid $60, the file is sent to Charles or I. We review the file, so that we know the details hen the attorney asks what the cases are about and then we start calling all the attorney who work on those cases, ie family law will have custody, visitation, divorces, and maybe even adoption. This last week was my first week, and I PLACED TWO CASES!!!! Hip-hip horay!! I also have like 4 more pending so hopefully, the attorneys will pick up the cases. Some of these people really need the help, especially for those in a abusive relationship or those abusing their children. Some of the cases are simple and others are REALLY messy!! Anyhow, next week I am hoping to start my second internship. I will be working with the judiciary. I am just so excited cause it feels like I will be like in a Law & Order SVU episode (yes that is cheesey, I know.) I will basically be a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) aide to a bunch of stuff: I will work the schedule appt from walk-ins and hotline, escort the clients to the circuit court and give them a little orientation (where to pay fees, file documents…), I will also attend court hearings (probably the most exciting part!!!) and help social workers by making copies, writing referral letters to agencies, and lastly I will write reports to Child Protective Services (CPS, this is exciting too:-)7/10: I started my new job, nothing exciting, except the fact that I left my phone in the building the first day of work!!! I am so wack!
