Neil's Round the World Trip!
I got up at 6am and had a shower, then I hopped on the Kookaburra bus with my Fraser Island group mates which took us to the 4x4 garage. We got out endured another safety video and then started to pile all our bags, food and more importantly "eskies" (oz word for cool bag full of beer).
Sarah (an arrogant, busybody, paranoid girl from Weston-Super-Mare) drove us to the ferry port with her toyboy boyfriend Alex in the front (he's 5 years younger than her). I took an almost instant dislike to her, although he was ok. She was the only person in our group who could drive as you must be over 21 and have had your licence for 2 years (I've only had mine 16 months).
We sat on the breezy top deck and crossed the strait to Fraser Island. We then drove along the bumpy, sandy road and encountered two dingoes on the way. They look a bit like malnourished foxes. They weren't the slightest bit interested in us and sauntered past us while we stared out of the 4x4 in amazement.
We arrived at the famous Lake McKenzie and ran down to the white sands and clear water's edge. It was paradise and finally water with no sharks or jellyfish-hurray! I swam from the beach to the other lake shore as it looked close but was actually miles away. I was exhausted when I reached the other beach and then had to swim back. I was reaching the shallows when my I got agonising cramp in my right leg! Fortunately it was there I got it, had it been earlier I may have drowned!
We had a picnic which consisted of mystery meat (SPAM) and tuna sandwhiches. We watched an iguana-like lizard eat some tourists left-overs.
We then drove to Dungarung further north along the coast. We had a few rough tumbles along the sandy shore as there were several huge dips. We finally reached the camping area and set up our tents as the sun went down. However it was pitch darkness when we tried to make our dinner of steak and salad, the lantern they'd given us didn't work either so we had to use a small maglite torch. The meal was ok but then as we were going to have a few drinking games it rained really heavily and so we had to take shelter in our tents for ages and eventually we all fell asleep. Oh I should highlight the most annoying aspect of staying on the island; sand flies. They are like horseflies and are everywhere! They harrass you in swarms and bite you given half the chance. Insect repellent doesn't work- they are so irritating!!!
We heard dingoes sniffing round our tents in the middle of the night although the surf from the beach was so loud it could have been our imagination running wild!
