Neil's Round the World Trip!
Today I got up early and checked out of my hostel in Cairns. I walked down to the bus station in balmy heat. I spoke to an English guy called Charlie who is doing the same route south and his seat was close to mine. We drove south past Mission beach and Innisfail. We stopped at a little village and had fish and chips. The beach nearby had warnings everywhere due to the prescence of sea-water crocodiles and marine stingers.
We continued on and watched a video on the bus, it was one of the worst films I've ever seen! It was called "what a girl wants"; awful! Anyway I arrived in Townsville and then got the ferry over with 3 Irish girls (from Dublin) the transfer bus took ages, the girls are on the opposite side of the island to me so I walked into my hostel alone and checked in. Charlie isn't doing Magnetic but I'll see him tomorrow when I arrive in Airlie Beach.
I then got changed before walking to the nearby Forts Walk which is a trail that goes up a steep hill and eventually at the summit there is an old WW11 fort built to protect Australia from Japanese invasion. I walked up as the sun was setting and had reached the summit when just like a light going off; it went pitch black. Needless to say the trip down was a bit nervy as I could hardly see anything and all you hear are animal and bird noises! I was looking for koalas but couldn't find any however 3 South African guys I met on my way down had found a few and had great photos. I don't seem to have much luck with wildlife. The South Africans kindly gave me a lift back to my hostel as it would have been too dangerous to walk along the road in the dark.
I then made bruschetta again for my dinner as it's really cheap and easy to make, say $6.
Tomorrow I leave Magnetic Island and head down to the Whitsundays Islands staying in Airlie Beach for a few nights before.
